Get started with the LastPass browser extension

For the most seamless experience, download and use the LastPass browser extension, to meet all your password management needs without ever having to navigate away from the website you are visiting.

The LastPass browser extension offers the following features and tools:

Fill usernames and passwords automatically using autofill
Save new passwords to your vault
Update existing passwords
Generate secure passwords automatically
Add and use other vault item types (for example, notes, addresses, payment cards, bank accounts)
Access your vault instantly
Customize LastPass settings and preferences
View alerts for at-risk passwords in your vault

Step #1: Create your LastPass account

Create your LastPass account by specifying an email address and master password.

Step #2: Download the LastPass browser extension

Once your account has been created, you can download the LastPass browser extension in one of the following ways:

Select Quick Install to download the extension instantly for the web browser you're actively using
Select Download next to your preferred web browser
Select Download next to the LastPass Universal Windows Installer to install for multiple supported web browsers. For more information on what is included in the installer, see Features included in the LastPass Universal Windows Installer and Features included in the LastPass Universal macOS Installer.

Step #3: Log in to the LastPass browser extension at least once

Once you have installed the LastPass browser extension, log in at least once to access your LastPass vault, which is the central hub where all of your data is stored.

Important: Logging in at least once to the LastPass browser extension:

Allows you to use some account recovery options (SMS recovery or reverting to an old password) if you ever forget or need to reset your master password
Creates a snapshot of your vault data in the form of an encrypted, locally stored, cached file
Automatically generates a sharing key so that you can create and use shared folders

Step #4: Manage your browser extension preferences

Manage your LastPass browser extension preferences to set it up in a way that works best for you. This includes settings for browser logout, notifications, and hotkeys.

Step #6: Use the LastPass browser extension

Your LastPass account has been set up. You can start using the LastPass browser extension menu to easily search for and access items in your vault, view and copy your usernames and passwords for websites, manage your vault items (addresses, payment cards, and so on).
