LastPass sends you a confirmation email to verify your identity when a login attempt triggers a security alert. Review why verification is required, how to complete the email verification process, and how to resolve common issues such as missing emails or expired links.
Note: If you're being prompted for email verification because you're trying to share a password or add a new user to your account, view these instructions instead.
To protect your account's security, LastPass blocks login attempts and sends a verification email in the following cases:
- When logging in from a new device
- When logging in from a new location
- When logging in from a new IP address
- When a device hasn't been used to log in to LastPass for more than 60 days
To proceed with logging in to your LastPass account, you must first verify your identity using the verification email.
Important: Complete the email verification steps only on a device and from a location that you trust.
Tip: You can check your IP address here for the device you're currently using.
- Log in to LastPass with your email address and master password.
- Result: A message is displayed on the login screen to either check your inbox for a verification email from LastPass or to review your login information and try logging in
- Review the reasons for encountering the message on the login screen:
Login information was correct, but you're logging in from a new device
- You entered a correct email address and master password combination, and you are trying to log in to LastPass from a new computer, mobile device, or from an unrecognized IP address or location.
- A verification email has been sent to your email address or security email address.
- Proceed with the next step.
Login information was incorrect
- You entered an incorrect email address and master password combination.
- No verification email was sent to your email address or security email address.
- Try logging in with the correct login information.
- Check for a verification email sent to the email address that is partially displayed in the error message on the LastPass login screen.
Important:
- If you have set up a security email address, the verification email was sent to that email address.
- If you cannot access the email sent from LastPass for email verification, see What if I don't have access to my email account? for more information.
Troubleshooting: If you did not receive an email from LastPass with the subject "LastPass Security Notification: Login attempt blocked", see Why didn't I get an email from LastPass? for troubleshooting tips.
- Select Verify new device or location in the verification email to verify your new device or location.
Remember: Once you have completed email verification from a device, that device is considered verified for 60 days. You can have up to 25 verified devices at the same time. When you exceed the limit, the device that was verified first loses its verified status, and you'll be prompted to verify your identity in email when you access LastPass from it again.
Important: Verified devices (that is, verified through email verification) are not the same as trusted devices (that is, when you are prompted for multifactor authentication and select Trust this device for 30 days). The trusted devices are listed in Account Settings > Trusted Devices.
Result: A confirmation message, "Thanks for verifying!" is displayed.
Troubleshooting: The verification link expires within two hours from when it was sent. For troubleshooting steps, see Why is my verification link expired when I verify my login attempt?
- Log in to LastPass again with your email address and master password.
Result: You have completed the process for email verification and logged in to LastPass successfully.
Results: You have successfully logged in to LastPass.
