Account Creation:
If you're new to LastPass, you can get started with your free trial at
https://www.lastpass.com/
If you don't feel like reading this guide, you may also watch this short video after setting up your account:
When starting your LastPass account, please use an email address you can access from anywhere and be sure to note the password in case LastPass sends any verification requests. This will be the only other password you'll need to remember besides your LastPass login.
When creating your account password, please keep these things in mind:
- Use a minimum of 12 characters, but the lengthier the better
- Use at least one of each of upper case letters, lower case letters, numerals, and special characters
- Make it memorable, but not easily guessed (for example, a passphrase)
- Make sure that it is unique only to you
- Don't use your email address as your master password
- Don't use personal information
- Don't use sequential characters (for example, "1234") or repeated characters (for example, "aaaa")
- Set a password with a maximum strength (ZXCVBN strength result is 100%)
- Make sure you don't use your master password for any other account or application
- Don't reuse old passwords
To maximize your security, use a randomly generated master password
** Tip: To generate a random password, use the LastPass Password Generator.
Software and Set Up:
While you don't have to install the LastPass application, we designed the user experience to integrate directly with the software for ease of access and live credential monitoring. Follow these steps to install:
- Go to the LastPass downloads website.
- Select Download for your web browser where you want to use the LastPass browser extension, or select Quick Install if you are currently using your web browser.
- ** Note: When installing the LastPass browser extension for Mozilla Firefox, a pop-up window appears, as a requirement to comply with Mozilla’s privacy policy that describes the data collection practices. In addition, it allows users to enable or disable optional data collection. For more information, see About permission request messages for Firefox extensions in Mozilla Support and Privacy policy for LastPass Password Manager.
- Add the LastPass browser extension to the web browser and enable the extension.
- Optional: Pin the LastPass browser extension to the toolbar.
- In your browser toolbar, select the inactive LastPass icon.
- Enter your email address and master password, then select Log In.
- ** Troubleshooting: If your company has set up federated login for your LastPass account, the master password field will disappear, and you will be prompted to select Log in and be redirected to your company's federated login sign-in page. For more information, see Log in to LastPass using the LastPass browser extension.
- Optional: Set the following in Advanced options:
- Remember Email
- Remember master password, then Confirm.
- Show on-screen keyboard
- If multifactor authentication is enabled on your account, follow the prompts to authenticate, which will vary depending on how multifactor authentication is configured for your account (for example, push notification + face or fingerprint, time-based one-time password (TOTP), SMS passcode, phone call, and so on). You can also enable the setting to trust the device for 30 days.
** Tip: If you have multiple authentication methods enabled for your account, you can choose a different authentication method by selecting Additional Multifactor Options (on desktop) or tapping Use Alternate Multifactor (on mobile). If this option is not available, you may be part of a company account that has disallowed this setting through policy. Learn more about enabling multiple authentication methods.
Results: An active LastPass icon is now displayed in your browser toolbar to indicate that you are successfully logged into LastPass.
You may now start adding passwords manually through your online vault at lastpass.com or automatically as you log into each site. Additionally, you may want to manage the LastPass preferences to customize the experience and general user settings.
