All of your stored data that is encrypted with your master password, including but not limited to the following will be deleted upon account reset:
- Passwords
- Notes
- Form fill items
- Identities
- Approved trusted devices
Warning: When resetting your LastPass account, your emergency access contacts (on both the People I Trust and People Who Trust Me tabs on the Emergency Access page) are also deleted. If you want to use emergency access after an account has been reset, it must be set up again.
What data will be permanently deleted?
All of your stored data that is encrypted with your master password, including but not limited to the following will be deleted upon account reset:
- Passwords

What data will remain untouched?
Some of your established account settings, including but not limited to the following will be kept upon account reset:
- Preferences
- History
- Established multifactor authentication options
What data will remain active?
Your account status, including current trial or paid subscription plan are unaffected during an account reset.
Reset your LastPass account
1.Navigate to
https://lastpass.com/reset_account.php
.
2. Select Reset.
3. When prompted, select No to indicate that you do not know your master password.
Result: A warning message indicates that resetting your account will permanently destroy all of your data, and will encourage you to export your vault data before resetting if you know your master password. However, if you do not know your master password, it is not possible for you to export your data as it requires you to log in to LastPass to do so.
4. Enter your LastPass email address, then select Send Email.
Result: An email is sent to your inbox that contains instructions and a link to create a new master password.
Note: Selecting Send Email only sends instructions for resetting your LastPass account. If you decide at this point that you do not need to reset your account, you can ignore the email.
5. To proceed with resetting your LastPass account, click the link within the email to create a new master password.
Tip: LastPass recommends using the following best practices when creating your master password:
- Use a minimum of 12 characters, but the lengthier the better
- Use at least one of each of upper case letters, lower case letters, numerals, and special characters
- Make it memorable, but not easily guessed (for example, a passphrase)
- Make sure that it is unique only to you
- Don't use your email address as your master password
- Don't use personal information
- Don't use sequential characters (for example, "1234") or repeated characters (for example, "aaaa")
- Set a password with a maximum strength (ZXCVBN strength result is 100%)
Tip: Learn more about how the strength is calculated for your master password and individual site passwords in your vault.
- Make sure you don't use your master password for any other account or application
- Don't reuse old passwords
- To maximize your security, use a randomly generated master password
Tip: To generate a random password, use the LastPass Password Generator.
Result: You have created a new master password and reset your LastPass account and have been logged out.
6. For security purposes, a verification email is sent to your inbox so you can approve this device as trusted. Check your inbox and select the verification link within the email.
7. Once verified, log in to LastPass:
- In your browser toolbar, select the inactive (gray or black) LastPass icon.
- Enter your email address and master password, then select Log In.
Result: An active LastPass icon is now displayed in your browser toolbar to indicate you are successfully logged in to LastPass.
Results: You have reset your account and have logged in to LastPass with your new master password.
What to do next: You can now begin adding items to your LastPass vault again. If you had previously exported your LastPass vault data or use another password management tool as a backup, you can import that data now. Otherwise, you can begin adding your passwords, notes, and other vault items.
