AI-Powered Vault Categorization Suggestions

2. Problem or Limitation Vault items frequently end up miscategorized or filed under "None," making it difficult to organize and locate credentials efficiently. Manual recategorization is tedious, especially as vaults grow.
3. Feature Request Introduce an AI-assisted categorization feature that analyzes vault items and suggests appropriate categories — including new ones — for user review and approval.
4. Proposed Behavior
   1. AI analyzes each vault item using a combination of site name, username, and URL to infer the most appropriate category.
   2. AI may suggest assignment to an existing user-defined category or propose a new category name if no suitable one exists.
   3. Suggestions are presented for user review; no changes are applied without explicit approval.
   4. A proactive mode periodically surfaces a "Vault Cleanup" prompt or notification badge when uncategorized or likely miscategorized items are detected.
   5. A manual trigger is also available (e.g., a "Suggest Categories" button or menu option) so users can initiate a cleanup on demand.
   6. Users can accept, modify, or dismiss individual suggestions before any changes are saved.

Thank you very much for sharing this idea, I really appreciate the thought behind it. An AI‑assisted categorization feature would certainly be a powerful and convenient addition from a usability perspective.

That said, I’d like to provide some important context around how LastPass is designed. LastPass operates under a zero‑knowledge security model, which means that all vault data is encrypted locally on your device, and only you have access to the decrypted information. Even LastPass itself cannot view or access the contents of your vault.

Because of this architecture, implementing a feature that would analyze or “read” vault items even for categorization purposes would conflict with this zero‑knowledge principle. In order for AI to automatically suggest categories, it would need visibility into decrypted data, which is something our design intentionally prevents to ensure maximum privacy and security.

That said, your suggestion is truly valuable, and I’ll make sure it is shared with the appropriate teams for consideration, especially as we continue exploring ways to improve usability while maintaining our strong security standards.
