My sites passwords are corrupted. They first appear intact, but are instantly overwritten by an old Last Pass master password.

Thanks. That seems to be the solution, but since doing it Last Pass won't save any password update or even copy and paste into notes. I can't see how the two are related, but there it is.

That isn't a LastPass problem. The master password was saved to your browser's password manager. Remove it from that database so your browser will stop overwriting the field.
