what should I do when LastPass does not automatically offer to save the details?
Do I simply exit the site and start again?

Welcome to the LastPass Community.
When you are about to create / save login credentials for a new site, you can use the LastPass Password Generator when the credential field is active by following these instructions. The process may vary if you're using a mobile device, but is very similar in nature. Once you enter the user name and password, and send that to the website, the LastPass browser app will automatically offer to save those credentials inside your Vault.
Thankyou for the suggested instruction sequence - I'll give it go very carefully. Those instructions suggest that I check circumstances better before trying to use the LastPass password generator.
