Moving LastPass Authenticator to a new phone

This is a problem when I had to switch phones. Last Pass Authenticator will save the TOTP secrets in the cloud. Let's say you lose your phone, the following will happen when you try to install Last Pass on the new phone (note: I am talking about Android, but IOS is probably similar).

1. You tried to install Last Pass Authenticator first because you know that any new device you add to last pass will require 2FA, but when you tried to do this, the last pass authenticator won't work unless you install Last Pass first.

2. When you install Last Pass on the new phone, it request that you authenticate using 2FA. Unfortunately, the authenticator on your new phone won't be active until you log into last pass, so you would need to authenticate using the old phone that you no longer have.

The safest solution would be to enable the Grid in Multifactor authentication. When last pass request 2FA, you select the alternate method of the grid and use the paper copy to enter the 2FA code. Once you are in, you can go and restore the secret to the last pass authenticator.

There is a process to move the LastPass Authenticator to a new device if you do not have access to the old device:

If your phone number has changed or the mobile device you use for authentication is lost, you will need to disable Multifactor Authentication for the LastPass Authenticator. To do so, you canuse SMS account recoveryto log in to your account and disable authentication.

If SMS account recovery was not previously set up, you would need to contact Customer Care, as disabling Multifactor Authentication via email is not supported for the LastPass Authenticator, or by having another Multifactor Authentication method set up in your LastPass settings so that you can use a different method to log in with as you described with the Gris multifactor authentication option.

Yes, but I believe in the past, you were allow only one 2FA method at a time in addition to SMS. Now you can have multiple 2fa means we should probably try to move off SMS and into something more secure. I have verified that you can use the grid to log into the system and disable 2FA, but you have to set it up ahead of time.

im sure this has been answered BUT.

Just to confirm, if i have my new and old phone.

1) i should be able to install the app on the new phone and auth with my old phone and add it

2) will all my existing 2fa account populate ?

Yes, you can install the LastPass app on your new phone and use your old phone to authenticate the new sign in. After you have done that you can install your authentication app and migrate your 2FA sites over to it. If you use LastPass Authenticator on your old phone and have backed it up to the cloud, on the new phone you can use the restore function. If you use Google Authenticator it has an option in the settings to create a QR code that you can scan with your new phone to transfer your 2FA keys over.

My biggest concern was all of the accounts i have in there and if they would recover on the new phone 🙂

I just checked backup to cloud and it was two months old!

I then did "refresh cloud now"

Is there no Automatic way to backup to cloud?

Then I ask to please confirm how exactly does the new phone populate with all the 2FA's I have in LastPass Authenticator [google, facebook, etc...]

I just checked mine and it hasn't refreshed since august.

did refresh and apparently it signed me out and was pretty much in offline mode.

Odd setting if it doesn't prompt to re-login

It seems like the Grid Multifactor Authentication method is a solid backup strategy! Have you already set this up, or is it something you’re considering for the future? If you don’t have the grid yet, a similar backup like SMS-based 2FA or recovery codes could also help bypass this situation in case of future phone swaps...

If TOTP secrets are saved in the cloud, restoring them directly to the new device sounds feasible... but only once you’ve authenticated into LastPass first, which brings us back to the original issue. Have you tried contacting LastPass support to verify other recovery options?

Great points about the LastPass Authenticator! That recovery process sounds like a real pain. Reminds me of the frantic clicking in my game, you can click your way to glory here to relieve some stress!
