... a week or two ago, instead of opening in a new tab, I'm getting a popup that asks for my master password. Did LastPass make this change? Or have I been hacked? PLEASE let me know.

yes I also find it annoying, it used to ask in new tab instead of new window, especially for Mac User in Full Screen Mode

The LastPass browser extension can be opened as a new tab or it could be used directly with the extension menu, the pop-ups are designed to show for accessing the vault, alerts or save new items.

However, if there is an issue with the performance of the extension, please create a case with tech support and provide a screen recording of it for our team to review.
