Just got off the phone with support and: 1. The email is LEGITIMATE and really from LastPass. 2. If you don't use Safari, there is no need to uninstall the old app and reinstall a new one.
What I find suspicious is that a) the link in the support article leads me to the app listing from the GoTo company instead of LastPass US LP, and b) after I find the LastPass US LP developer and its extension, that extension is already 4+ years old. That doesn't really jive with it being the "new" extension after the split off from GoTo earlier this year.
It may still be legit, but the communication is very confusing. And given that LastPass holds quite a lot of very important information, I am cautious.
Funny thing is, if you follow their instructions you end up installing the very same app you're supposedly trying to replace. Their link to the "new" LastPass for Safari app points to the original. Doh! However, if you search you can find the new one. I've installed it to check it out. It's basically no better than using the lastpass web interface on your browser of choice. Worse even because now the LastPass Firefox extension no longer works.
I'm returning to the original app because the new one s u c k s. I want LastPass to have a presence in my task bar. And unless my Firefox extension works, this whole thing is (far less) useful to me.
Also, if you click the "How to update" button within the email, it leads you to this article, which reinforces the fact that this is not fake...

I don't think it's fake. I have emails from replies@m.lastpass.com dating back to 2020.
I also have the same concern. I use Firefox on my Mac. I do not use Safari, nor will I.
I'm (most) impressed that @jeriwas able to get support on the phone! Well done!
I also think it's fake. The Reply-To is more than suspicious, i.e., m.lastpass.com does not exist. I also do not use Safari but do have that extension installed from some time ago.
Thanks all for the responses. Looks like all is well.
Hi, I have the same issue - it looks fake to me as well (a very good one though) Unfortunately There is no way to contact support to alert them, I hope they read this.
Correction: LastPass Firefox extension actually continued to work regardless which app was installed (or not). I was in a private browser when I tested. Sorry for the misinformation.
I now have neither app installed and my Firefox extension is working fine. I still prefer to have an the lastpass presence in my menu and taskbar. I will not be installing "Lastpass for Safari" because it's only useful within Safari. It appears to basically be an extension for Safari. Nothing more. And since I don't use Safari, it's useless to me.
I'm here trying to determine if the email was actually from LastPass. If it's not it was a masterful impersonation. Because I can't find any reference to the required update on this site I'm leaning to it being fake. I like you don't use Safari but use Chrome instead on all my Macs. I assume that the Chrome extension will not be affected even if the email is real.
I've created a case with LastPass and will post any response.
Case response from LastPass:
Hello Jack!! thank you for contacting LastPass Support! My name is Francisco, and I really hope you're having an amazing day! Please know that I will do my best to help you in any possible way with the app issue.
Yes, that's correct. With the recent changes from LastPass, there will no longer be a standalone client for Mac. Instead, LastPass will be accessible primarily through browser extensions forSafari,Chrome,Firefox, and others. This means you'll need to use these browser extensions to manage your passwords rather than a dedicated desktop application.
While this shift may feel inconvenient, the browser extensions will still provide the functionality you need for password management. If you have any further questions or need assistance with the transition, feel free to ask!
