I do see an explicit upgrade from Free into Premium, but concerning Families it looks like a complete new account will be created. I am afraid to loose my current passwords from my free account.

We completely understand your point and it is a good question regarding upgrading your subscription and make sure nothing happens with your information.
None of your information will be removed or modified or deleted by the time you upgrade your account status from a free to premium or families, even if you go back to free, nothing will be removed or modified.
That said, you cannot upgrade your account subscription without a problem.

Yes, a misspell there. Just be sure to upgrade through lastpass.com, and not through your mobile app store.
