Thanks for your patience, everyone.
Please perform a full re-install of the LastPass app to receive version 4.139.3, then log back into your account and please let us know if the issue remains.
The temporary fix may not show the performance improvement right away, but take several minutes for the background actions to level out. Please let us know if the high CPU behavior persists after 10+ minutes using LastPass version 4.139.3.
I don't know the details of the background task, but yes. Both Edge and Chrome both started using ~15% CPU all the time once LastPass updated to Version 4.139.0.Yesterday it was only in Chrome and I noticed my Edge was on the previous version.Today both are high and both on the same version.

I facing the same issue on firefox and chromium. As soon as I disable lastpass, my cpu goes back to normal.
I've noticed on Chrome since yesterday 2/4 too. Has my CPU constant at 40% usage. When I kill the Chrome process that's running high CPU I get a message that LastPass stopped working so I know that's the source. I'm on version 4.139.0 also.
Good point about the Vault page, Seth. Same with me.
Same for me in Edge on w11. Lastpass consuming an entire core, causing thermal throttling and battery life destroyed.
4.139.0
I have the same issue with the extension and the Vault page if I have it opened.
I reinstalled the extension and still have the same issue.
I've opened a support ticket, and they have had me "unplug it and plug it back in"
1. Clear the cache and cookies of your browser.
2. Uninstall the LastPass Extension from your Browsers https://support.lastpass.com/s/document-item?language=en_US&bundleId=lastpass&topicId=LastPass/uninstall-lastpass.html&_LANG=enus
3. Add the LastPass Extension by going to https://lastpass.com/misc_download2.php and select the option "Quick Install"
4. Log back in through the LastPass Extension, open the vault from it and monitor the cpu usage from the task manager.
5. If the problem persists, please get the diagnostic logs from the LastPass Extension https://support.lastpass.com/s/document-item?language=en_US&bundleId=lastpass&topicId=LastPass/create_diagnostic_logs.html&_LANG=enus
6. Replicate the behavior, this will be recorded in the logs you are getting from the LastPass Extension.
7. Provide us the Operating System you are running on your computer, Browser Version
It has not helped yet. I'm about to send them my logs.
I'm seeing this same issue, just noticed it today on Chrome 132, but also updated to Chrome 133, and it's still happening. Both using LastPass version 4.139.0
Just saw this and posted my own thread. I see the issue is a tad widespread.
Will wait it out I guess.

We are investigating the cause of this currently and hope to have a resolution idea soon.
Additional data point. The excessive cpu usage starts on browser loading, settles down after a while, and occurs again whenever a new web page is opened.
Same here on Vivaldi 7.1 (Chrome-based) and Linux kernel 6.9. Vivaldi Task Manager shows background-redux-new.js eating ~100% of cpu time one or a combination of cores. It causes the fan in my laptop to run on high, which is pretty noisy. Runs at 100% for a few minutes, then stops for about a minute or two, then resumes. I turned off ad and tracker blocking for lastpass.com, but that didn't change anything. Lastpass appears to go out to the Internet as the cpu use ramps up, then tapers off. Closing the LastPass extension resolves the cpu-eating issue. Really hope this gets fixed soon. It's very annoying.
I can confirm the same behavior, with the worst-on-load, but then frequently reappearing when opening new tabs, etc.
This is all well and good - but exactly what is the point of this new file? (background-redux-new.js)
Was LastPass suddenly so broken that it needed this - whatever it is? And no one noticed that it was chewing CPU when it was still in test?
Same problem here on Edge. I am just disabling the extension and only turn on when I need it until this gets fixed.
@User17388713544072013322 where can I find and install an older versions for chrome? Thanx!!!
Not the first time I've had this problem, but it's nice to know I'm not the only one. Rolled back to an old version until they fix this.
This again,
Lastpass is reverifying password reuse on every load of the extension. If you have a large database this will cripple your machine.
If you have 10-20 passwords it shouldn't take long.
This is a regression to a similar bug about 6 months? ago.
Don't check the entire list on every start. Sometimes two things must have the same password.
Look, LP deleted the other CPU thread where today I just got several responses. Now why would they do THAT???
This has been a TERRIBLE issue for months. It may have already been a year by now. LP doesn't care about fixing it otherwise they would have already.
I forgot about the issue when I saw someone respond to the thread. I turned off LP THAT I PAY FOR and my computer's fan stopped running. It's been running for days FREAKING ME OUT.
Just terrible how terrible this company treats us, & to answer the other thread's question... LogMeIn no longer owns LP.
They were bought out AGAIN by an unknown shell/company & you know what that means, right?
I no longer trust this company.
They even refused to help me with their bugs & I PAY FOR THEIR SERVICE!!!
Don't get me wrong, this is bothering the crap out of me, too. I can't stand the sound of my PC fan running all the time. It's why I keep checking this thread and my support ticket multiple times a day and why I am willing to spend my time with them on the phone and help by sharing my logs.
Your comment of "what is this thing doing grinding thru my passwords" did get me thinking. I just looked through all of the settings for the extension and the account settings (both personal and teams) and I can't see anything which appears to disable that. But, just in case, I did go through and turned off every option in the Extensions. Then I turned on a few which were off before, like "Hide LastPass options from context menu". I mention this just to save someone else the trouble, because it didn't help.
@derek.hassellhow do you roll back to an earlier version?
Just FYI to everyone, I opened a support ticket for this and LastPass appears to me to be taking it very seriously. They have called me multiple times, setup a Teams meeting to observe it, collected logs from my PC, and updated me every day that they are still working on it. It clearly has something to do with the size of my LP database or that I am the admin of a company Team. On my PC they had me log into a burner account with just a few entries and the extension used low CPU for just a few seconds and then went fully to sleep. I'm not saying you are not correct to be frustrated, just letting you know what I have seen.
@Ash Cannonshould we roll back to the earlier version that User173...322 recommends? I'm getting very tired of having to disable the extension whenever I'm not using it and having to login again over and over (even if Passwordless is helpful in making this somewhat less painful).
@jasonplease keep us posted and perhaps you could ask your assigned support person that same question. I'm willing to go backward to stop this from happening until it is properly resolved.
same issue at Brave on Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS
same goes for the brave browser
We're also seeing this with our users, has been going on for about a week now. Needs sorting out ASAP - getting frustrated with the problems we've had with LP over last year or so
Jason
Glad they are "looking" into it - however many of us have tiny databases and are just users. And still a 10% CPU hit. This makes no sense based on how many PWs one has.
But it also goes back to my original question - what is this thing doing grinding thru my passwords without being asked to anyway? I will let LP know if/when I ever want its to do this and I do not care for any warnings or alerts about old passwords, duplicate passwords or any other decisions I have decided work for me.
This thing should simply quietly serve up my PWs as required and do nothing else. Leave the "admin" work (or whatever this thing is doing) to a manually checkpoint of my choosing.
Same issue here with Edge. Just tried deleting and reinstalling the extension but it is the same. The extension process is using 35% CPU at idle.
Just joining the party here. I've got all the same questions and concerns, but wanted to provide these screenshots showing evidence that it happens both with the extension running or even with the extension disabled, but simply browsing the LP websitehttps://imgur.com/a/lastpass-cpu-usage-AG66l8M
LastPass 4.139 insanely high CPU usage on current version Brave browser (chrome based) as well.
Brave CPU usage increases from 1.5% to around 25%, and probably even higher than at other times because everything else in Windows 10 becomes sluggish.
Thanks to the (customer) above for the link to old version 4.137.2 ✔️
In Brave, the extension updates cannot be stopped, but I will reinstall the old LastPass daily if I need to - or until I cancel my subscription, whichever comes first.
