When I click the wrench icon to view a password, it shows the SAME INCORRECT password for each of my saved sites. Therefore, when I need to find a saved password for something, I can't view it, whIch I thought was the whole point of LastPass.

Make sure your browser's internal password manager isn't overwriting the field. Check that list and delete anything related to LastPass.
