We’re excited to officially launch the new LastPass forDesktopapp forWindows. After months of public testing and user feedback, it’s now out of beta and ready for you to download. Note: The old app will be retired in January, so now is the time to upgrade.

What’s new? The app delivers the same secure vault experience you trust, now with a cleaner interface and smoother navigation. Plus, we’ve added the QuickFill Companion, a new feature that makes logging intodesktopapps easier than ever. No browser required, just autofill and go.

Time to switch: The old app is being retired

On January 21, 2026, the old LastPass forDesktopWindowsapp will no longer be supported or available for download. We’re giving you plenty of time to switch so your experience remains uninterrupted.

What you need to do before January

Download the new app from the Microsoft Store or the LastPass downloads page to avoid any disruption to your LastPass experience.
Remove the old app from your device:
1. Open the Start menu.
2. Search for and selectAdd or remove programs.
3. In theInstalled appslist, locateLastPass for Desktop.
4. Select the LastPass iconand clickUninstall.
5. When prompted, selectUninstallto confirm.

Already switched? That’s great! You don’t have to do anything further.

These instructions are confusing. I installed the new LastPass for Desktop app.

I have 3 apps in Windows:

LastPass (uninstall only)
LastPass for Desktop
LastPass for Windows Desktop

So, now it says I should uninstall the "old one."

Which one do I uninstall?

We just user the browser extension not the app - do we need to use the app?

We offer you multiple option to access your account, the web version, the extension and the desktop app.

Is not mandatory to use the desktop app to access your account information, but to get all the tools from your account we recommend you use the browser extension and in combination with the desktop app they will work together.

where is the answer to the first question on this page? I am going to install the new Desktop App .. but would like to know if I should uninstall my current application.............

@Verlaine_LP, I followed the instructions to uninstall the desktop app and install the new version, and lost all my browser extensions.

The instructions said "uninstall the app" which I did, and "install the app", which I did. I did not discover that the browser extensions would be uninstalled ALSO until after I installed the app.

When you send instructions like that, if there's a risk that browser extensions will be deleted also, you shoud suggest people use the universal installer and not just "install the new app".

Regarding your question "would like to know if I should uninstall my current application" is not mandatory to remove the old application, you can download the new version and keep both apps in your computer without a problem, but make sure to keep the old one just in case you need to check some information that does not shows in the new version that is still on BETA VERSION.

However, we have not received any notifications from other customers indicating that installing the new app would automatically remove all other browser extensions. We believe the app is not linked in any way to the browser extensions. If you experience any other issues after installing the app, please let us know.

I just created a case with Last Pass, since updating to the new LastPass for Windows Desktop my passwords are not auto filling, the instructions for troubleshooting fail because after selecting Applications, I can't launch because there are none.

LastPass is not even listed as a program so I could not uninstall even if I wanted to.

I agree. The directions are extremely ambiguous. After installing the new app, I have the following:

Icon on Desktop -- "Last Pass for Windows Desktop" Ver. 4.16.00

Icon on top of Firefox Browser -- "Last Pass" Ver 4.149.3

Icon in Taskbar - "Last Pass For Windows Desktop" Ver. 4.16.00

Icon in Settings/Add or Remove App "Last Pass for Windows Desktop" Ver 4.16.00

But the instructions refer to the "new LastPass for Desktop" and to the "old LastPass for Desktop Windows" :

So, while the instructions say to "locate 'LastPass for Desktop" in Setting/Add or Remove/ Installed Apps and uninstall it, the icon I see is "Last Pass for Windows Desktop": Is there a difference between "LastPass for Desktop" and "LastPass for Windows Desktop"?? It seems that the instructions are telling you to remove/uninstall the NEW app "Last Pass for Desktop"
