Why is there a number 1 over my last pass extension icon in chrome. It goes to 2 and higher when I have entries that are not complete, like a missing folder. But there's ALWAYS a 1 over it and I can't figure out why.
Is this what you mean?
note that it happens all the time, even if I'm on google. there's always a 1 in the extension bar.

I assume you dont have any login items related to the site in your vault?
Can you post a screenshot of the page after you click on the LP icon so I can see the list?
where exactly do you find the preferences page? I've looked on both the web page and app.
The number badge should indicate you have a saved login item for the website you are currently visiting. I assume you dont have any login items for Google (as shown in your example)?
Have you tried to empty you local cache:https://support.lastpass.com/help/how-do-i-clear-the-local-cache-for-my-vault-lp010126or uninstalling / reinstalling the extension?
Alternatively, you can disable the badge on the icon:https://support.lastpass.com/help/how-do-i-change-my-notifications-settings-in-preferences-for-lastpass> Show number of matching sites toolbar
