About your issue, the best practice ismake sure you don't have the master password store in your browser password manager, please access the password manager in your browser, delete any password stored for LastPass and disable autofill.
To ensure it won't happen again after doing the suggested troubleshooting, clear cookies and cache for all time, restart the browser and test it

Thanks a lot. This in fact solved the problem. I was not aware, that I ever had added this important password to a password manager, but it was there....
Anyway - since Lastpass is not active automatically any more (because of two factor auth.) it is more convenient to work with the browser pw managers for not so delicate passwords. but of course I should keep the master pw for lastpass more secret.
