But it never sends me an authentication email, and trying again results in the same message. What's going on?

I'm sorry to know you're having trouble with your login, in the case that an email is not being triggered it could be that the Master Password being used is invalid. Please verify your password or you can also review this article: Why didn't I get an email sent from LastPass?
