One-Time Password for Recovery + Testing Recovery

Been an LP user for a long time and been thinking about recovery options lately - just in case.

I wonder how the one-time password for recovery is saved, is that directly in the extension or how?Will it still work if I clear my browser's temporary files on every shutdown?

It's weird though, I can get it to work in Chrome which is my default browser but installed LP in Firefox, logged in, closed it and tried recovery - but that didn't work. Hmm... anyway, have some options now, that's good.

(Found other threads about people having issues with connection in Firefox, I think that's the issue for me as well. The ROTP hasn't been created at all).

And as for testing a recovery - is it safe to say that it can be done all the way through to the actual master password change without doing any changes to the existing password / vault?

Hi@Former Member The Recovery One Time Password (different from the regular One Time Passwords that you can generate from your account), are created when you sign into the browser extension successfully. They are stored in the temp files of your browser, so if you clear that they are deleted until you sign in successfully again. Been searching some more... and it sounds like the OTP for recovery is installed/created seperately - and is NOT among temporary internet files. (Wrong: It IS in the Internet Cache / Temporary files)

"Direct access to a previously logged in computer is always required for recovery, whether it's the email or SMS route. This is probably not explained clearly enough in the docs, that it seems to be a common misconception. "

"If you disable the recovery OTP in the extension preferences (i.e. delete OTP from local device), both routes are cut off. " (SMS and Security mail)

... and it sounds like the best solution is to get used to having fingerprint enabled on the phone so recovery option is available there. But I'll also change my cleanup settings.

LastPass Free customers that select mobile as their device type can still use the browser extensions for account recovery and other account settings, they just do not have access to their vault through the extension. In the same way, customers that select desktop as their device can still use the mobile app for account recovery.

This is no longer helpful at all, in fact it just pisses me off because I can’t use the browser extension on a desktop after having my one device be an iPhone… Why in the world didn’t you tell people or me to make sure and create the temporary passwords for account recovery that would be written down?! I have the extension on my laptop but there are no helpful warnings about this scenario which I am in now… And I can’t use both the chrome extension and my iOS app which I can get into just fine but can’t access my master password… This is so messed up. You have my phone number, you have my device ID number, you have my email you have everything about the phone LP app Is installed on but you won’t send me a freaking verification text code on MY 1 device for a password reset?! This stinks I wish I had never gotten Last Pass for the last seven years!

Do we get any temporary access to our chrome extensions on a desktop if we’ve not used it since the one device rule went into place? You guys have really bent us overcwith this & With all of your preliminary emails about only being allowed to have one device for free accounts, unless we want to pay blah blah, you don’t mention all these probable scenarios that are no longer solvable!
